How to Get the Best Tire Swap Service: Key Things to Know

At Wheeler AutoCare, we understand that ensuring your wheels are securely installed is crucial for your safety and peace of mind. We follow industry-standard procedures and use specialized equipment to guarantee that no mistakes are made during your tire swap. Here's a look at the process and why you can trust our services.

Safety Procedures and Equipment

Blue case and torque wrench

1. Careful Preparation with Lug Nut Sockets and Torque Wrench Our process begins with the strategic placement of our tools. The location of the lug nut sockets, which are used to remove your wheels (seen in a blue case), and the torque wrench (seen to the left of the blue case), which is used to confirm your wheels are on tight, is set at the driver’s feet.

When our technicians go to remove your wheels, they will need the lug nut sockets and will be reminded to place the torque wrench on the driver's seat. This placement of the torque wrench ensures that no technician will be able to drive away after servicing your vehicle without being reminded to go back and confirm by hand that your wheels are on tight.

2. Precision with an Electric Impact Gun When installing your wheels, we use an electric impact gun that is torque-limited to 90 ft/lb, matching most manufacturers' specifications. This ensures your wheels are securely fastened at the initial point of installation before we lower your car back to the ground.

3. Double-Check with Hand Torque Confirmation After the initial installation, our technicians use a torque wrench to hand-torque the wheel lug nuts. This additional step might seem redundant, but it provides an extra layer of assurance. Immediately after, you'll receive a written confirmation that your wheels have been torqued according to your manufacturer’s specifications.

Post-Installation Recommendations

4. Re-Torquing After 100km After driving on your freshly installed wheels, it is common for one or two of your lug nuts to loosen off just a little as your wheels settle into their new positions. It is rare, but in some situations your lug nuts may loosen off excessively. This is more common with alloy rims. We recommend having your wheels re-torqued after driving 100km. This is a standard industry practice and one we always remind our customers about to ensure ongoing safety.
